I took some time this summer to "pull together' some thoughts about the Artisan teacher and you can read below what I've written. I hope that this helps our teachers and administrators by providing perspective on this important initiative.
Who:
The Artisan Teacher program will increase teacher efficacy through teacher talent development. Improvement in teacher efficacy is closely linked to student achievement/success and to improving working conditions in schools. Secondarily, the goal of implementing the "Artisan Teacher" is to change the culture of teaching from evaluation of effectiveness to one that examines effectiveness in the context of coaching and developing the talents of teachers.
What:
SOCL - Skillful Observation and Coaching Laboratory, a "job-embedded PD experience that builds principals' instructional leadership capacity through a targeted, methodological approach to observing, developing and coaching teachers." The goal is to provide meaningful, rich feedback to teachers based on classroom observations and the collection/analysis of data collected based on observations in the classroom. The methodology is "centered on specific tools based on 23 themes of teaching talent synthesized from evidenced-based national best practices in teaching and learning."
When:
Granville County Schools will have a fully implemented "Artisan Teacher" program by 2014 that not only coexists with the teacher evaluation instrument in North Carolina, but meshes seamlessly with said instrument. All teachers will acquire the vocabulary necessary to facilitate effective coaching, develop the inderstanding to discuss effective strategies that impact teaching, and to become proficient in applying effective strategies consciously in the classroom.
Year 5/6: 2012-2014 (All Cohorts - All Certified Staff)
IPA - Instructional Practices Assessment: Accuracy/assessment measure used to gauge the degrees to which identified strategies (23 themes) are applied in the classrooms.
Goals:
Effectively support GCS Leaders to support teaching in the context of coaching and developing teacher talents.
